Technical Translation and Wireless
Networking
Where would we be without technical translators? When really good ones are
found, they can be an absolute treasure and should be held onto with all the might of a pit-bull terrier, sending
them a box of chocolates throughout the duration of their translation project and buying them dictionaries and
thesauruses galore!
Ok, scrap that, maybe translators aren’t too big on chocolate – they probably also know every single word in every
single dictionary and thesaurus off by heart. My blue-haired fairy godmother tells me that a super-duper Wi-Fi
connection would be a more fitting gift for a super-duper technical translator as it would elevate them to even
greater heights of technical translator stardom, helping them work faster like you wouldn’t believe. For example,
technical German to French translation (Übersetzung deutsch französisch) can be very difficult, but a wi-fi connection makes it so
much easier toaccess the right technical terms and translate accordingly.
So what’s Wi-Fi, exactly? Well, the word Wi-Fi is just a short technical lingo-speak for saying Wireless
Connection or Wireless Network. Yep, no need for wires. It’s a much welcome alternative to almost tripping over
wires in the office or home because, guess what?, everything is wireless, including the modem! Wi-Fi also allows
for a super fast connection speed when one is online.
A Wi-Fi connection is fairly easy to set up. I can vouch for that as I installed one in my home and found it pretty
straightforward to set up. I’m not the most technically minded person on the block when it comes to computer
hardware, so believe me, if I can set a wireless connection up, then anyone can. So for a business such as a
technical translation (Fachübersetzung) one, setting one up shouldn’t present too much of a dent in the day to day
functioning of the business.
It’s also cheaper to go wireless. Saving on costs is what most companies love. For a translation company, they can
then either choose to pass that saving onto their clients in the form of discounts - or plough it back into the
company. Competition amongst Wi-Fi providers will probably ensure that costs continue to be driven down even
further in the future. That works out fabulously for a company or an everyday consumer, especially for a small
business.
With the faster connection a wireless offers, it also makes for the faster transfer of data. This means that PDFs
containing completed work such as translation German English (uebersetzungdeutschenglisch.com) documents can be sent, received and downloaded a lot
quicker.
The task of translating is also made that much easier due to the mobility a Wi-Fi offers. For a freelancing
technical translator who works from home, for instance, they are able to move their laptop around different parts
of their home and still stay connected to the internet. They can even stand on their heads if they want! If it’s a
particularly hot day, they don’t have to feel bound indoors – they can go out into the garden and still be online,
using a search engine or two for their research and whizzing their merry way through web pages in the blink of an
eye. Alternatively, they could choose to go to a number of cafes and libraries that have Wi-Fi hotspots.
